Frequently asked questions

What is counseling?

Counseling (also referred to as therapy) does not need to be a mysterious process. At its core it is a safe relationship in which all of a person can be known, understood, and chosen. It is a relationship in which everything can be expressed, and nothing needs to be excluded, minimized, or denied. It might be a long journey, or it might just be for a season. Sometimes it is for multiple seasons, wherein deeper work can be done with greater clarity and response. It is often more challenging than expected, at first, and can lead to a greater awareness of one’s own internal world. We will work with you to identify the core issues at play in your life and seek to go beyond mere symptom management to deeper work and deeper healing.

What can I expect to happen in therapy?

While no specific outcomes can ever be guaranteed, you can expect that you’ll be encouraged, supported, and even challenged to reflect deeper on your thoughts, feelings, and bodily experiences. You’ll be prompted to see how your current experiences connect to your story. You’ll be invited into a deeper relationship with yourself, others, and God.

Do you accept insurance?

We are not in-network with any insurance providers. However, we can help you make sense of what, if any, out-of-network benefits you may have. To get started, complete the following steps:

  • Step 1: Call the number on the back of your insurance card.

  • Step 2: The virtual response system will ask questions to verify who you are (member ID, date of birth, address, etc.)

  • Step 3: Ask to speak to a representative.

  • Step 4: Tell the representative you are looking for “out-of-network mental health benefits in an office setting”.

  • Step 5: Ask the representative the amount of your deductible and if the out-of-network deductible has been met (and if not, how much remains).

  • Step 6: Ask the representative what the fee max for 90791, 90834, and 90837 are. (These are billing codes used by the insurance company. 90791 is for the initial session, 90834 and 90837 are for ongoing sessions.)

  • Step 7: Ask the representative whether telehealth sessions are covered. (This is necessary even if we typically meet in-person, in case we ever need to meet online due to one-time events such as inclement weather or illness)

  • Step 8: Confirm the address on the back of the card is where you should send claims or whether there is an online portal where you can upload/submit claims.

After you obtain this information, feel free to discuss it with us as you consider your budget and potential counseling costs.
If you wish to utilize any out-of-network benefits with your insurance, we will provide you with a superbill document to submit as a claim to your insurance company.

I don’t have any insurance or out-of-network benefits through my insurance; do you offer any discounts?

We want to make counseling as affordable as possible, whenever we are able. If the posted fees feel out of your reach, please suggest a fee that may work for you. If it works for us, we’ll see if we can move forward together. We recommend weekly therapy sessions, so please consider your budget accordingly.

Do I have to be a Christian or religious to participate in therapy at Rooted Souls?

Absolutely not. We understand that faith and spirituality is a vital component for many people and that not everyone identifies with a particular religion or faith tradition. It would be unethical for us to force our values and perspective on you. We simply wish to make space for those who want to talk about that which is Ultimate, Boundless, and Transcendent to do so without judgment.

What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction differs from therapy. It is not clinical, and it is explicitly Christian. It is a way of coming alongside another who wishes to grow in their awareness and response to God’s presence and call in their lives. Spiritual direction generally takes place about once a month, though it may be more frequent at the beginning of the process. Spiritual direction may focus on a particular issue or problem, but it generally focuses on helping an individual through a season of life in which following God, experiencing prayer, or practicing the disciplines seems to be a challenge. If you long for more depth in your relationship with God and have found the answers offered you to be shallow or lacking, consider spiritual direction.

Peter received his initial training through Spring Arbor University as part of a masters in Spiritual Formation and Leadership. He completed a Certificate in Spiritual Direction through North Park University in 2016 and has personally participated in spiritual direction since 2010.

What sort of training and consultation do you provide?

We have come alongside a variety of groups and communities who have been in need of support during a challenging time or who have wished to move, as a community, into deeper growth. We offer a free initial consultation to listen and understand your community and the needs of it, working with you to clarify and put language to your concerns. Then, if we think we’re a good fit, we offer a proposal of care that helps to meet your objectives. We’d welcome the opportunity to explore a possible fit with you.
Examples of previous work include: consulting with church staff on helping the congregation begin to understand the value of spiritual formation in their own lives, helping a medical office find language for the stress and burnout they were experiencing during the height of the pandemic, offering crisis management training to a religious shrine staff team, providing clinical consultation to church lay leaders overseeing support groups around mental health topics, helping volunteers at a crisis call center learn how to better engage in self-care, helping a church staff make space to discuss significant losses they had experienced, leading a day-long retreat for counselors-in-training on the value of rest and Sabbath and how to implement those rhythms, leading a retreat for college students on developing a personal growth plan, training youth leaders on engaging in hard and fruitful conversations.

The people in my organization are showing signs of burnout and fatigue. How can you help?

We have specialized training in helping with burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary trauma (the trauma we experience as a result of working with people in crises) and have specific experience in working with not-for-profits, churches, and educational groups. We can work with your organization to offer a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan. This can be as large or small of a scope as your budget. There’s no one-size-fits all approach to recovery, so we tailor our approach to fit your needs.

Do you provide supervision for licensed graduate counselors?

Charlanne has worked with graduate students and masters in counseling graduates working towards full licensure since 2005. She is a board approved supervisor with the State of Maryland. If you are a recent graduate working in Maryland and your current agency or practice does not provide supervision, please contact Charlanne to consider the possibility of clinical supervision.

What if I am in crisis; do you have crisis services?

We do not have crisis services available as part of our practice. Besides calling 911 or going to your local emergency room, you can also call 211 for hotline assistance, or call/text 988 for both hotline assistance and someone to talk to if needed. If you are a client or become a client and are in need of crisis services, you can also discuss this with your therapist during your session in order to consider any additional resources available to you.

Can you provide me with medication?

While we licensed counselors are not able to prescribe medication, we may discuss the idea of consulting with your doctor or another medical professional about whether medication could be a helpful fit for you. Because we address clients as a whole person, it is important to also take physiology into account alongside mental health treatment.

How am I matched with a counselor?

We care strongly about you working with a counselor who is a good fit for you. If you do not request a particular counselor at Rooted Souls, we will take into account the reason bringing you to counseling, our availability, your schedule, and other factors you may request to make a good match.
